i have pentium 3, windows 98se, when i switch on the computer hangs repeatedly. what should i do?

upgrade to at least windows 2000. I don’t even think microsoft supports 98 anymore. reformat and install 2000. good luck!

Try upgrading to a more stable OS. Your computer should be able to handle Windows XP if you have enough hard disk space for it.

Update to XP. 98 is an old operating system and is no longer supported by Microsoft. That means you can not get any security patches or updates for it. If you run 98 on the web, you are simply asking to be infected with viruses and all sorts of spyware.

Here’s the best solutions of the described problem.
> Go to Start Menu
> Click “Run…”
> Type “msconfig” without quotes i.e. msconfig
> Go to Startup tab
> Disable the startup programs which are not necessary.
> Reboot your computer.
See the positive results!!! Also remove/uninstall junk softwares when you get chance.

Make sure you don’t have too many programs that are starting when you start windows
Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK,go to the startup tab and uncheck any unnecessary programs.

Its seems there should be some sort of conflict between your windows and some software you have installed… Try formatting your computer and reinstall Windows……better go for Windows XP…

I recently had a similar problem on Pentium-3 hardware running Windowsw 98 Second Edition. Ultimately I combined hardware from two such PC’s into a single working (stable) PC running Windows XP. This was cheaper (and quicker!) than diagnosing and upgrading individual components that might cause the “hang” problem. I’ll never know whether it was the memory, CPU, motherboard, or video card.
If you are seeing wallpaper but no desktop icons or start button, it could be that explorer.exe failed to start rather than any hardware hang. When this happens, you need to start explorer.exe manually (this is not iexplore.exe – the Internet explorer). Since I’m not running Win-98se anymore, I can’t test the procedure here. Under Windows XP you press CTRL-ALT-DEL to run the task manager, from which you can issue a “run” command for explorer.exe. I expect there is a similar mechanism under Win-98se for starting the Task Manager or otherwise issuing “run” commands without explorer.exe already running.
